Demeter, Goddess of Corn, Harvest, Fruitfulness, Motherhood Demeter lost her only daughter, Persephone, to Hades, the God of the Underworld. He abducted her one day while she was gathering narcissus. Demeter, not knowing her daughter's fate, blamed the earth for her loss. Animals died, no crops grew and the people suffered. Finally, Persephone's fate was revealed to her and Demeter went to Zeus for his help to regain her daughter.
