Medusa. One of the three Gorgon sisters, who personified the terror of white cresting waves. Medusa was only half goddess and so was mortal. She was once a beautiful woman who dared to challenge Athena with her looks. Angered, Athena took her charms and changed her hair to serpents, leaving her a cruel monster who turned all who looked at her to stone. Athena's final revenge came when she aided Perseus in his task to kill Medusa. She gave him a mirror so he could see her without looking directly at her and also her sandals so he could fly away swiftly when the deed was done.
