Persephone, Queen of the Underworld and Goddess of Fertility Persephone was the daughter of Demeter and Zeus and wife of Hades. Hades had abducted her and kept her against her will as his wife. Zeus commanded her release, but before she left, Hades tricked her into eating a pomegranate insuring that she would return to Hades for four months of the year. Upon her release, Demeter forgave the earth and so we have 8 months of growth, maturation and harvest while Persephone walks the Earth with Demeter and 4 months of dormancy while Persephone returns to Hades.
