I found that there was a rather strange, conspicuous loneliness about waiting down in subways. And, no matter how early I would depart in the morning to make the long trek to the station the train on the other track, going in the opposite direction, would always arrive first. My eyes would follow it as it came to a screaming squeaky halt, watch the doors slide open to the braced masses of people exiting(and still others entering), then quickly close again. I'd continue to watch as the train hurried away, down those smooth tracks, towards the light. And, as I watched I became aware of the cosmic cruelty of that bright white light at the end of the train station, as my train pulled up, headed in the opposite direction.-Melvin Butler, 22
He sent me a note that said, "I'm leaving with or without you-you have to choose..."Enclosed was a train ticket. This was my chance at a new life with a man who never made me feel inadequate, who somehow loved me no matter what.It was a simple decision really. I gathered what I could fit into my train case, put on my best suit, and locked the door on my old life. In ten more minutes, he will arrive and we will step off the platform together to start a new one.-Anonymous
It is hard to understand the point of the rain cap... I remember seeing them at the five and dime my sister and i used to go to. The sketch on the package was always the same. The sketch was of a women in her early thirties having a great time walking through the rain. The drawing only had three colors; pink, white and black. The women that bought these packages, that were always by the cash register, always had the big pouffey hairstyle. They always smelled of aqua net and had long fushcia fingernails. We lived in a old small town that had the corner meat market, drug store, Christian book store, ice cream parlor, three hairdressers and the pub. On rainy days coming home from school, my sister and i would always point out the ladies in their clear plastic caps. We wondered how long one cap would last. Do you have to be a certain age to wear one, and if so how old? It seemed to us that an umbrella would be enough, but then I guess the wind would mess it up. But don't you think that all the aqua net in their hair would stop the wind from wrecking it?-Elizabeth Giknis, 18
